This is a letter posted on Monday, January 8, 2007 from the president of the San Jose Pride Board:

Dear Community Members,

Happy New Year! I'm very excited to announce our 2007 Pride theme: "STRONGER TOGETHER". This Theme echoes the 2007 Pride Committee commitment to furnish a fantastic festival on June 9th and 10th, 2007 at Discovery Meadow Park in San Jose.

We have witnessed forward movement by the LGBT community locally and nationally in 2006. Supervisor Ken Yeager's (2006 Grand Marshall) victory in Santa Clara County, the new vanguard in Washington, New Jersey Marriage Equality, and review by the California Supreme Court in marriage cases are just a few of incredible changes.

The 2007 Pride board is a volunteer organization working hard on creating changes as well.

Recently we conducted an online survey at our web site: http://www.sanjosepride.com/ and had overwhelming responses. We read your comments, heard your concerns and now want to answer some of your questions.

San Jose Pride is not San Francisco Pride and never will be. Our festival has never tried to mirror the SF festival. We are San Jose and Silicon Valley Pride. We are your neighborhood, your business, your community and your Pride.

Our 2006 festival cost $220,000 to produce. This amount reflects the festival weekend only. Some expenses you may not be aware of are: $40,000 for City services, $35,000 for entertainment, $ 15,000 for tents, $11,000 for our sound system, $ 6,000 for fencing, $5,000 for private security (24-7 on festival grounds) and $3,000 for porta potties are just a few of the expenses we incurred.

In 2006 we had $38,000 in sponsorship money. We are very proud of our Sponsors and could not continue without their support. Bud light as our presented By sponsor, HP as our Main Stage Sponsor and we were so happy to welcome the first Congressional Church of San Jose as our New Family day Sponsor, The Rainbow Chamber as parade sponsor, Splash as the Pro-Latino sponsor, Gilead Science

(New in 2006) as our Western area sponsor, Red bull and Bad Boys Bail bonds. We also had" Friends of Pride " sponsorship; the Wednesday Morning Breakfast group, Sara Creek Veterinary Clinic, Ed Kolb and Dick Niblock were new in 2006.

San Jose Pride is a non-profit organization that relies on sponsorship and our Primary fundraising event " Oscar Night" to turn out our yearly festival.

This year I'm very excited to announce that our Oscar Night celebration will be at the Hotel Valencia on the Santana Row in San Jose. We are thrilled to have Jennifer Lin aka Asian Poster Bride emcee our event. Jennifer has a wealth of experience and numerous appearances that showcase her drive for Equality in our community. Please visit her web site: www.asianposterbride.com for more information.

We trust our new venue, and leadership will reflect our commitment to change and new beginnings in 2007. Oscar Night is Sunday February 25th, 2007. Please visit our web site for more details. www.sanjosepride.com.

Another question I would like to address is why do we have to pay to get into the festival on Sunday? As I stated, we are a non-profit organization and we rely on sponsorship and Oscar Night to help defray the cost of the festival. Each year our expenses increase and we either stay the same with our sponsorship levels or decrease a little. Yes, our gate fee has increased in the past year but our city expenses have as well. There are many ways one can avoid paying the entry fee on Sunday. If you volunteer a one four hour shift either Saturday or Sunday you are entitled to entry into the festival on Sunday. Remember Saturday is Family day and is free to everyone. On this day we highlight local talent on the main stage and one can enjoy the vendors, and gathering of friends free of charge.

We also do not charge seniors, youth 12 and under and anyone with a handicap (must show handicap ID). As much as I would like to have no gate fee it is not possible without increased sponsorship that would cover the operating cost of the festival weekend. Sponsorship information and opportunities are available on our web site or contact me at akretowiczsjgp@yahoo.com.

Our board (volunteer) meets the third Thursday of each month at Moorpark Hotel at 7:00 PM. I invite anyone to join us to express concerns, ask questions, or join our board at this time.

A lot of positive change has happened in the past three years with our volunteer board. I encourage all community members to become involved and ask questions. Be a part of a new direction and lets become "STRONGER TOGETHER"

A friend of mine got his final approval to begin a survey for
his dissertation so now he needs our help.   It has to do with
how LGBT identity affects people in the workplace. It is completely
anonymous so there is no fear that anyone would find out who took it.

How are LGBT identity and job performance related?

We need your help.

Little is known about:
 - how attitudes related to one’s sexual orientation influence one’s ability to successfully perform one’s job.
 - how LGBT people cope with their work environment, especially if it is biased against them.

Help us learn more.  Researchers at the University of Louisville* are conducting an online survey that explores the experiences of LGBT persons in the workplace.

If you are an LGBT individual (age 18 and older) and employed (fulltime or part-time), you have the opportunity to make a difference by participating in an important research study.  The survey is completely anonymous and confidential.  It costs you nothing except a few minutes of your time.

To participate
Go to www.lgbtworks.com
Click on the link, and you’ll be immediately taken to the survey.

*This survey is part of the research for a PhD dissertation.

Investigators names and address:
Samuel C. Stringfield, Ph.D., Principal Investigator
Gary M. Collins, MDiv, MSFT, Co-investigator

The San Jose Pride Board wants to here from you. The Board has put together a survey to get the community's input on the Pride festival and would like to know what worked and didn't work for you during the last Pride Celebration. With your support, San Jose Pride '07 will be bigger and better for all.

To take this survey go to San Jose Pride's website and click on "Complete our Survey" from the menu bar at the top of the page.

The San Jose Pride Board is asking the LGBT community to take part in selecting the 2007 celebration theme, which marks the 32nd year of San Jose's premier LGBT event.

Keep in mind your theme should be concise and direct, potentially include a relevant political view point, and encompass all aspects of the LGBT community. Please understand that this is a contest for the theme name only, not the graphic elements.

The San Jose Pride Board will choose five finalists from the online submissions. The finalists will be posted online at www.SanJosePride.com for the LGBT community at large to vote on their favorite until November 15, 2006. The winning theme will be announced online on December 1, 2006.

The winner will receive recognition in the Official San Jose Pride Program, as well as two VIP packages, including admission to the Festival and VIP tent during Sunday's festivities.

Please visit the San Jose Pride website to submit your entry in the News and Events section. Deadline to submit your entry is November 9th, 2006.

This community is to provide LJ users with News and Information for the San Jose Pride Celebration and Festival along with any other information for the San Jose and greater Bay Area LGBT community.

For further information, please visit the San Jose Pride website or our MySpace sister site SJGP.

The reason behind this community is that Steven is now a member of the San Jose Pride Board and is trying to make some major changes to help inject some life into the San Jose Pride Celebration. With his help, the board has already changed the official website from San Jose Gay Pride to San Jose Pride. A small change, but one that was needed and will help bring together the LGBT community as a whole. Some other things that the board is working on is to reduce and/or eliminate the entrance fee to the Pride Festival held on Sunday. Hopefully by passing the word onto the LJ community, more voices will be heard and he can help bring about changes to make the San Jose Pride Celebration become a better one.

If you have any suggestions or comments please feel free to post them. Also feel free to invite those interested to join this community and again, Welcome!

ps...please remember to click on the Watch Community button so that you will see any post made here on your friend's page.
